House fire on
Sugarman's Road in the 3504 Box
On
Thursday, November 3rd, 2011 Wagontown
Fire Company, Ambulance 144, Martin's
Corner Fire Company, Coatesville VA
Hospital Fire Department, and the East
Brandywine Fire Company were dispatched
at 1301 to the 100 block of Sugarmans
Road in West Caln for reports of a house
on fire. Calls to 911 indicated flames
and smoke were showing from an attached
garage of a single family dwelling. The
Company responded soon after dispatch
due to the reports, the Chester County
911 Center upgraded the call to a
"Working Fire Dispatch" which brought
additional resources from the
Sadsburyville Fire Company, Tankers from
the Westwood Fire Company and Honey
Brook Fire Company, an Air unit from the
City of Coateville Fire Department, and
Medic 93.
Wagontown Chief Ziegler also requested
that three additional Tankers be
dispatched to the scene due to a lack of
hydrants in the area. Tankers from the
White Horse Fire Company in Lancaster
County, Glen Moore Fire Company, and
Twin Valley Fire Department were
summoned to the scene. The crew from
Ambulance 144 arrived simultaneously
with Wagontown Deputy Chief Patton at
1306 and confirmed the reports with
heavy fire conditions noted upon
arrival. A vehicle was noted in the
driveway and reports were unclear
whether or not anyone was trapped inside
the home. For this reason, crews
prepared to conduct a search for
possible trapped occupants.
Engine 35 was instructed to proceed into
the driveway and drop a water supply
hose down at the street for incoming
Tankers to supply water. Due to the
seriousness of the incident and
potential for entrapment, the crew of
Ambulance 144 along with Wagontown
firefighters aboard Engine 35 quickly
deployed multiple hose lines and began
to enter the structure to initiate a
search and fire attack. Chief 35
(Ziegler) arrived shortly after and
exchanged command with Deputy Chief
Patton who then set up the Water Supply
Officer position to ensure an adequate
water supply for the attack operation.
Westwood Chief McWilliams and Battalion
Chief Sly arrived on the scene with
Wagontown Engine 35 and were able to
place their EMS command vehicle in a
position which allowed for a Command
Post to be easily established and
utilized on the fire scene. Chief
Edwards of the East Brandywine Fire
Company arrived and assumed the role of
the Operations Officer positioned at the
front door of the home, supervising
crews inside. Assistant Chief Scott
arrived shortly thereafter and
immediately ascended the roof to
ventilate super-heated gases from the
home in an effort to stop the fire from
spreading. Firefighters from Wagontown,
Westwood, Martin's Corner, Honey Brook,
Sadsburyville, Glen Moore, Twin Valley,
Coatesville Fire Department, Coatesville
Veterans Affairs Fire Department, and
White Horse Fire Company of Lancaster
County all worked throughout the
afternoon to contain the blaze and
prevent further damage to the structure
or its contents.
The fire was officially placed under
control at 1415.
Two firefighters were transported to
Brandywine Hospital for evaluation and
treatment for minor injuries sustained
fighting the fire.
Crews remained on the scene putting out
"hot spots" and sifting through debris
for several hours.
Good job to all firefighters and crews
for an aggressive interior search and
fire attack to contain the bulk of the
fire damage to the area that was found
upon arrival.
