Change your clock - Change your battery
Campaign
By: Asst. Ziegler
The Clocks change this Sunday March 9, 2008 at
0200 Hrs, so it is time for you to take a moment
to ensure your family is protected. According
to a U.S. Fire Administration Press Release,
4000 people died in house fires last year.
Unfortunately, in two-thirds of these fires
there were no working smoke detectors. This is
why the Wagontown Fire Company is encouraging
everyone to test the smoke and Carbon Monoxide
alarms, in their homes. Homeowners should also
realize that smoke detectors only last 8-10
years. Pushing the 'test' button will test the
battery and alarm, but not necessarily the
ability to detect smoke. If your detector is
more than 10 years old, it may not function
properly in a fire, even though it beeps when
you push the test button. A smoke detector is
your first line of protection from a fire in
your home. Please make sure your smoke detectors
are working and are less than 10 years old.
Also, it is a great time to make sure everyone
in the house reviews your home’s escape plans,
making sure everyone is familiar with at least
two ways out of your house. Review with your
family where to meet after you all have left the
residence, this will assist the fire department
in knowing if everyone is out of the house or
not.
Remember, properly working smoke alarms can save
lives!
