Wagontown responds to control burn gone wrong.

Friday January, 4 2007

By Asst. Chief Ziegler

At approximately 14:15 hours Station 35 and Station 34 (Martins Corner) ambulance were dispatched to the 300 block of South Sandy Hill Rd for a trash fire.  Units responded quickly as we were wrapping up from an accident with entrapment that we had just cleared. Upon arrival, Utility 35 and Assistant 35 (Ziegler)  were met with a moving field fire with exposures to a barn and horse shed. Assistant 35 established Sandy Hill Command and instructed the Utility to go high on the fire to cut off the spread. Brush 35-2 handled the lower end and exposure problem of the barn while the Engine provided a water supply and acted as the Command Post.  The fire was started by the owner who was burning a debris pile and it spread in the dry grass to an area about an acre in size. Crews knocked down the fast moving field fire and we then tasked with overhauling the numerous other large debris piles that became involved in fire.  During the incident Station 34 was asked to stand-by on their station.

Units on scene: Utility 35, Brush 35-2, Engine 35 and 34 Ambulance
