Today the members of the
company assisted the Chester County Parks
Prescribed Fire Crew with a 4 acre
controlled burn on the Rice Farm property.
The members assisted with Utility 35 and
Brush 35-2 with holding crews and water
supply. The use of prescribed fire as an
ecological land clearing tool has been
around for years, and many benefits can be
derived from the use of fire in the
environment. Fire removes the invasive
plants that inhibit the growth of naturally
occurring species of certain plants and
trees thus leaving no room for normal
growth. The firefighters assisting with the
crew have been trained in Wildland
Firefighting tactics to ensure the
prescribed fire does not leave the
boundaries set up for the burn. A
comprehensive plan has been set up by the
Counties burn boss which takes into account
for weather, fuel moisture and other
environmental considerations prior to the
fire being set, ensuring the safety of the
crew and surrounding community. Crews
working today's fire allowed the fire to
burn the unit and controlled the fires
movement as well as growth. Special thanks
to the County for allowing our members to
take part in these burns.
