06/16/09
By: Chief T. Ziegler
On Tuesday June 16th the company was dispatched to Fox Lane in West Brandywine for a compost fire reported to be next to a shed. On arrival of Chief 35 (Ziegler) it was found that a 6 X 6 composting pile was smoldering from the inside of pile. Upon arrival of Brush 35-2 and the engine 2 lines were stretched to extinguish the pile and protect the shed. Crews then opened the pile and began to separate the burning material.  After about 45 minutes on scene the fire was extinguished and the area was cleaned up for the homeowner.

A reminder to homeowners that composting piles should be kept away from sheds or other structures, as they decompose they can generate heat and actually catch fire as was the case in this incident.

Units on Scene: Engine 35, Rescue 35, Brush 35-2, Brush 35-3
Mutual Aid: Tanker 49
