By Wagontown Volunteers
April 14, 2018

On Saturday just after crews returned from a morning training session the company was dispatched at 12:42 hours to the 100 Block of Mallard Dr. for a gas leak outside. Chief 35 arrived onscene to meet with the propane service tech who advised a relief valve had broken on the in ground propane tank. Engine and Rescue both arrived with crews from the earlier training moments later and set up for operations.

The Hazmat box was struck bringing the Chester County Hazmat Team (15) along with Ambulance 144 and Medic 93, Engine 33-5 was requested for a water supply as well. Crews initially evacuated the neighboring properties as the vapor was hanging in the valley, and then set up a handline for protection. As the incident progressed Engine 31-1 and Engine 48-5 were brought to the scene for manpower while the technicians from Superior Propane worked to control the leak.

After 7 hours on the scene the incident was placed under control at 18:57 Hours after Superior finally brought in a flare and burned off the contents of the tank, during the incidents 144 set up rehab due to 1st warm day of the season and crews rotated through the incident.

Final 35 and 15 units cleared the scene at 20:45 hours.

Wagontown would like to thank the Hazmat team and the mutual aid partners for assisting us with this long incident and working together to bring this incident under control safely.
